Why Do We Seek Permission To Live The Life We Want?

Why Do We Seek Permission To Live The Life We Want?

What’s Your Move?

When an idea comes to you, do you take action or do you seek approval from those around you? We’ve all been there before, you may not even realise it. Yearning for something new, to change direction, to try a different path. Yet we don’t take the leap. Instead we wait for someone else to give us permission.

Why Do We Seek Permission To Live The Life We Want?

What’s up With That?

Friends and family have the best intentions in mind but the truth is, only you know what will make you happy. If you truly want something and you know that it’s right for you, then what are you waiting for? We all like to believe that we’re living life in accordance with our own wants and desires. Yet we seek permission in all sorts of circumstances. Sometimes the permission slip is for a big life changing event and others are for trivial things. Whatever the size, by waiting for approval you’re giving away your power and your right to choose. You’re living your life in accordance to someone else’s decisions.

Do You Trust Yourself?

Often what keeps us from living life to our full potential is our self doubt and our fear of judgement. We crave validation for the choices we make. It almost seems as though we don’t trust ourselves and our instincts. More often than not, the person who you’re seeking approval from hasn’t done what you’re planning on doing.

A couple of months ago a friend came to me with an idea, something new which they wanted to try. I was the first person they had shared this thought with and I of course felt incredibly flattered. I encouraged them to give their idea a go, knowing deep down that all they really needed was someone’s permission. Someone to give them them the thumbs up. To let them know that it was okay to try something new. I can completely relate to this, I would have done the same thing!

And so You Wait…

Before I started Those Positive Thoughts I felt as though I needed approval from those around me. I was afraid of what others would think. I hadn’t shown my writing to anyone before and I was scared in case someone’s negativity would dampen my enthusiasm. I gradually told people my idea and I waited for the green light.

This is Your Permission Slip

You are a brave, a creative and an independent individual, you do not need anybody’s permission to live the life you want. Yes you can value the opinion of those around you but the only person you need approval from is yourself. So be happy, be successful and give yourself that permission slip.

As long as you understand why you want to do something and you know it will make you happy, then you can trust that it’s the right decision.

  1. I know exactly how you feel! When I first started my blog, I needed a little bit of a kick in the butt from my role model ???? but it was all good because she was there for me. You’re right, though, if you have self confidence; you don’t need the approval of others to do what you want.

  2. Love it! I didn’t realize until after I was 30 that I was in charge of my happiness. Once I stopped relying on other for their permission I was much happier 🙂

  3. I love this! I often feel dictated by others. On facebook around the graduation period, people out of school scare me by telling all the graduates, ‘welcome to the real world, where all you do is work & pay bills”
All you do is work & pay bills? Are you actually serious?
I am out of school & this period in my life has been an adventure!
It’s depressing to see others equate leaving school (which everyone hated anyway) to being nothing but a slave to work & bills.
    Why?
Noone in the world was put on earth to be enslaved to work & bills; you & I & everyone in the world was born for so much more. We were put on earth for a purpose, with great meaning. Work & bills are just a spec of dust that comes with our short period on earth.
I have plans to travel the world, starting with Europe (my number one preference) but let’s see where in the world I get taken to! Argentina? America? We’ll see!
We can follow each other on our journeys!

    1. Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I completely agree, after I left school I went straight into work but it wasn’t long until I needed to break free and go on an adventure! So I headed to Australia and New Zealand. It was honestly the best thing I done for myself. I hope you have a brilliant time travelling and you see as much of the world as you can! Thanks for commenting.

  4. I love this! I recently launched a website and have been having the exact same thoughts and seeking validation from others. What you have written is so true. We know ourselves the best and we know what’s best for us. So just do it! Trust yourself! – Thank you for posting this 🙂 I’m definitely sharing to my page.

    1. Hi Sam, thanks for commenting, I’m so glad you liked it and could relate 🙂 It’s good to hear that you have launched your blog which by the way looks amazing, I especially love the video you’ve created as an introduction to The Elevated Journey!
