Have you ever worked really hard for something you wanted, only for people to say how lucky you are to have done or achieved such a thing? Maybe you wanted to go on a big holiday or to travel so you worked a second job and saved your income. Maybe you wanted a promotion so instead of working 9-5 you stayed those extra nights to finish a project. Whatever you achieved, you would be offended if people put it down to luck, wouldn’t you?
Luck won’t be by your side when you’re running that extra mile. To create opportunities you first must have the right mind set. Your mind controls your thoughts, your behaviours and your habits. Of course, luck does exist. The lottery for example, you have to be extremely lucky to win against those odds! If we rely on luck then we will never know when or even if opportunities will arise. Instead we must be dependent on ourselves and create our own opportunities. The lucky people are simply those who have taken more chances than average.
You can create opportunities for yourself if you take charge of your mind and the way you perceive things.
I understand, stepping out of your comfort zone is hard. There is fear of being judged, fear of showing your flaws and imperfections. As soon as you do take your first step, you will be pleasantly surprised. Things are never as scary as you once believed and your self-doubt and anxiety will sure enough disappear. With every new thing you try and every opportunity you take you will feel more and more courageous. Once you’ve found your courage, don’t let go. The moment things stop being easy is the moment when things begin to change.
Positive people naturally create more opportunities for themselves. They would be seen as the lucky ones. Even when things don’t go as planned. These lucky people are able to keep going and keep creating more opportunities. If you are optimistic you will see opportunity in every challenge. If you are negative, you will see a challenge in every opportunity. Be positive and start believing that good things will happen and soon enough, they will!
The best way to predict the future is to create it but sometimes things don’t always go as planned. It’s important to be flexible in life in order to take on new challenges and opportunities. Usually our first reaction to change would be to resist and stand by our current method. If we embrace change and become adaptable we open ourselves up to more opportunities.
Sometimes the opportunities we want might be too far from our reach, leaving us feeling unmotivated. If that’s the case you simply need to start with smaller more reachable opportunities. Let’s say you wanted to be a photographer but you don’t have any experience or a very good camera. Paying for a course and new advance camera sometimes just isn’t feasible. Start small, use the camera you already have and be your own teacher. Post your pictures online, print them for your friends and family. All of a sudden you have created your own portfolio of photos and created your own opportunity.
It’s amazing how many more opportunities you’ll find when you look for them. From my recent experience, my colleagues invited me to join them for a run on our lunch break. Now that may not sound like much of an opportunity on its own. Yet this situation pushed me to enter my first public race and to run my first 10k! Keep your mind open to new experiences and you never know where it may lead.
Know yourself and know your vision. When you create opportunities you first must know what opportunities you wish to create. What are your values? What are your skills? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Lastly what are you most passionate about? Once you have an idea of what you want, you then need to believe in yourself. As long as you believe in yourself, then you have all the support you need. Know that you are enough and know that you are capable.
I hope this can inspire you to get out there are create the opportunities you know are possible. Even those you hadn’t thought of!
