The Miracle Morning routine: I recently read the book The Miracle Morning* by Hal Elrod and in this book he shares with us six habits that will transform our life before 8am, Elrod calls these six habits the S.A.V.E.R.S. These practises are designed to give you the best start to your day by making small improvements in the key areas of your life. Such as your mind, body, career, relationships and any other areas you wish to improve.

The Miracle Morning routine
1. Miracle Morning: Silence
The first habit is silence. The idea is to start your morning with a clear mind, the most effective way to do this is through daily meditation. Meditation is one of the most powerful ways to deal with stress and find calmness and peace in your everyday life. When we feel like we have little control in our lives, we tend to avoid the present moment and ignore what’s happening inside our body, mind, and soul.
A lot of the time we’re looking for distractions from the present, whether that be through social media, food or TV. By practising daily meditation you’re training your mind to be present and allowing your emotions to come and go. You don’t need to be a guru to meditate, start small with just a couple of minutes in your morning routine, and start your day in calmness and with positive thoughts.
2. Miracle Morning: Affirmations
The second habit is affirmations. Affirmations are positive statements which you repeat to yourself in a way to support your success. They can help you to develop a more positive perception of yourself and your life. The repetition of affirmations will keep you motivated and focused on your goals. They can influence the way you think and behave. Think about what you tell yourself on a regular basis, is it mainly positive or negative? Affirmations can change obstructive behaviour and habits.
They can help undo the damage caused by negative statements which we have we repeatedly told ourselves in the past. Affirmations can be used in two ways. The first is to speak the affirmations aloud to yourself, ideally in a mirror, for example when you are doing your make-up. The second way is to write the affirmations down several times in a journal, this is my preferred method as I like to incorporate affirmations into my morning pages.
3. Miracle Morning: Visualisation
The third habit is visualisation. The best way to incorporate visualisation into your morning routine is to first spend some time creating a vision board. Seeing your dreams everyday on your board will help bring them to life. It will release the drive inside of you which has been dying to get out. I was nineteen when I made my first vision board. It was so much fun to make and I actually managed to achieve most of the things on the board. Creating the vision board gave me a purpose and most importantly it inspired me.
Once you have created your vision board and filled it with inspiring things and your future goals, look at your board every morning even if it’s just for a minute, to keep reminding yourself what you really want, who you need to be and what you need to do to become this version of you.
4. Miracle Morning: Exercise
The fourth habit is exercise. Incorporate exercise into your morning routine and start your day by realising endorphins and relieving stress. You’ll have more energy and enjoy the sense of achievement as you complete each workout. Not only will you feel stronger and healthier you’ll also reduce any feelings of anxiety and depression.
However, if you’re like me and you’re not a fan of exercising first thing in the morning, then remember that this doesn’t have to be a full on exercise, the idea is just to get your body moving, you can just do 5-10 minutes of stretching, toning or cardio.
5. Miracle Morning: Reading
The fifth habit is reading. The idea behind incorporating reading in your morning routine is to read something which will inspire you or motivate you, or something which will develop your learning.
You basically want to read something which will take you one step closer to becoming the person you want to be and the life you want to live. To get you started, here are some of my favourite personal growth books.
6. Miracle Morning: Scribe
The sixth habit is to scribe, which means to journal and to write. Journaling is the perfect way to practice self-care and to reflect on your life. It will help to release any stress and let go of any negative thoughts or worries which are on your mind.
Use your journal to manage your thoughts, you can do this by writing down your feelings, ideas or goals. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are some journaling prompts for self-reflection and self-discovery.
Customise The Miracle Morning
One of my favourite things about The Miracle Morning routine is that it can be aligned with your goals and dreams. You can mix it up every so often to keep it new and exciting. I’ve tried a variety of morning routines, some for when I have one hour to spare and others for when I have only twenty to thirty minutes.
Stick to The Miracle Morning
In The Miracle Morning book, Elrod writes that it takes thirty days to incorporate a new habit. He divides the thirty day time frame into three ten day phases and explains the challenges faced with each stage. It’s helpful to keep this in mind when you start new habits such as a new morning routine. You are more likely to stick with it if you know what emotions and roadblocks to expect.
[Days 1-10] Phase One: Unbearable
The first few days of a habit can be easy and exciting but as soon as the newness wears off, reality sets in. You hate it, it’s painful and it’s not fun anymore. Making the first ten days “feel almost unbearable” If you are prepared for the first ten days, if you can understand that initially it will be challenging but only temporary, then you are on the road to success.
[Days 11-20] Phase Two: Uncomfortable
Phase two is considerably easier than the first ten days. You’ve started to get use to your new habit but you still need to be disciplined and committed. While your new habit is no longer unbearable it’s still easy to fall back to old behaviours. Keep going, “you’ve already gone from unbearable to uncomfortable.”
[Days 21-30] Phase Three: Unstoppable
Your new habit is now changing from something you’re trying to something you’re becoming. It’s becoming part of your identity. Phase three is when you can really start to enjoy the habit, the enjoyment is what will make you continue it in the future.
